Basel is one of the largest cities in Switzerland with a population of about two hundred thousand. The city lies on the border of Switzerland, France, and German. The city is located on the Rhine River and functions as the centre of the pharmaceutical and chemical industries. Basel is an important part of the cultural centres of Switzerland.
Basel has a large number of museums, fine arts centres, theatres, and collections of art. When the Roman Empire founded this settlement, they located the city near the river. For this reason, it has long had a strategic importance to the area. Much of this historic city was destroyed in 1356 when an earthquake damaged the city and the castles. To help the city protect itself, it offered many courts to the nobles to get them to remain in the city.
In 1501, Basel joined the Swiss Confederation and began the construction of the council building. One of the greatest books ever published, De humani corporis fabrica was printed in the city. More martial arts texts were printed as part of the city's cultural heritage. Basel became an international meeting place. The World Zionist organization held its first congress in 1897. The city's economy relies on watches and jewellery and the chemical and pharmaceutical industry.
A large number of banks also exist in Basel. The city has the second tallest building in Switzerland (Basler Messeturm). This city has many churches, monasteries, secular buildings, archaeological sites, museums, archives, collections, and schools in Europe. The city is home to a vast array of buildings that reflect the architectural designs of the era and they often include the Beyeler Foundation building designed by Renzo Piano and the Vitra complex.
