East Coast Trains History
Starting in 1996, East Coast trains ran 100 services Mondays through Friday and 90 services on weekends. The routes total 920 miles carrying 18.7 million people in 2008. The East Coast Trains operations include, Inverness, Aberdeen, Scotland, to London with principal line operating between East Coast Main Line and London and Edinburgh.
Features of East Coast Trains
The East Coast Trains operates 42 trains with over 3,000 employees serving customers from offices, to stations and depots.
On Board Facilities
Numbered Seating: Each seat on East Coast Train has its own number to assist you with locating your seat. Odd numbers are next to the window and aisle seats are marked with even numbers.
Wheelchair Spaces: All of East Coast Trains have at least two wheel chair storage spaces. You will find this space varies between the HST and the electric Mallards. Contact should be made with Assisted Travel to verify the type of train you will be travelling.
Quiet Coach: Located in coach B of the East Coast Trains is Quiet Coach. This coach is located at the end of the train and provides the least disturbance of through traffic during your travel aboard the train.
First Class: East Coast Trains provides it First Class travellers with the relaxing experience in the lounges located at the following stations:
• London King’s Cross
• Edinburgh Waverley
• Wakefield Westgate
Each lounge provides complimentary refreshments and newspapers and includes access to free WIFI and business facilities, for faxing, copying, and workstations if needed.
Travelling with Children: Children under the age of 5 may travel as long as they accompanied by a fare-paying passenger, for free. Facilities are available for baby changing in coaches G and L toilet compartments. East Coast staff is unable to heat baby food due to safety reasons.

East Coat Trains offers several ticket options to help their passenger reach their destination. The common tickets are Advance, Off-Peak, Anytime. Also offered are the All-Inclusive Ticket packages, Season and Mobile Tickets, Group Travel and Weekend Upgrades. Terms and conditions of restrictions are posted for all tickets.
Advance Ticket Option – Advanced tickets on East Coast Trains are a single one-way ticket and provide the lowest available price if you are flexible with your travel time. The Advance ticket can be used for both the First and Standard class and can provide additional savings when combined with the Off-Peak travel. Your purchase of a First Advance ticket will provide you with the facilities advantage including access into First Class Lounges, free Wi-Fi, and selected complementary beverages, with supplied newspaper, or magazine.
Off-Peak Ticket Option – The Off-Peak ticket will provide you with savings when you are able to travel during off-peak times but also need some flexibility. Your Off-Peak ticket will be valid with most operators and can be purchased up to a few minutes before your train departs. You will be required to depart on the date of your ticket however; return travel is valid for one month from purchase.
Anytime Ticket Option – The Anytime ticket will offer you full flexibility for both first and standard single and return tickets. They are valid with most train operators and can be purchased a few minutes before departure. Restrictions include returns being valid for one month and single Anytime tickets are valid for one day.
All-Inclusive Ticket Option – The All Inclusive ticket package not only includes car parking, a meal or snack on the train, but also provides additional travel arrangements on Docklands Light Railway and bus travel in London. An added benefit with your All-Inclusive ticket is the upgrade to First Class or Standard Business package at no extra cost. When purchasing package tickets you will have the following package options to choose from, Package Name, Class of Travel, Duration of travel, Purchase timelines, included food and underground connections in zone 1 and zone 2, and included parking options.
Season Ticket Option – If you are a regular traveller of the First Great Western, looking for a flexible ticket with no time or train service restrictions this is your option. Season Tickets provide five choices to increase your discount on trips you regularly take. Consider Rail Only, Travelcard, Train Bus Combined, Car Parking Passes, and the Annual Gold Card for your season ticket choices.
Season Tickets Option –This option is for you if you want unlimited travel on any train. Season Tickets are available monthly or annually, can be purchased for any duration between one to twelve months and can save you 15% annually. There are no restrictions on time of day or between any two stations, except during Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Your seat reservations are free with the Season ticket and can be made up to 7 days of the ticket expiry.
Mobile Ticket Option – East Coast Trains on selected off-peak services offers Mobile ticketing between Leeds and London. Your Mobile ticket is purchased using East coast Main Line Company Limited M Ticket. It is non-refundable valid only for the train, seat, and date of the reservation. The Mobile ticket option will require the traveller to have an enabled mobile telephone WAP compatible and be registered with “Your Account” on East Coast Trains website.
Group Travel Option –Using the Group Travel option will give you the opportunity to travel with friends and family. Groups need to consist of 10 or more and reservations can be made in First or Standard Class. Take advantage of Group Travel Service as they can assist you with reserved seating, connecting travel, and meal discounts.
Schools and groups with 20 or more students are offered special fares and the teacher travels free.
Weekend Upgrades:–You can enjoy the First Class accommodations when you upgrade your Standard class ticket on Saturdays, Sundays, or Bank Holidays. Your upgrade will cost you, depending upon your journey, £20 to£25. The following Standard tickets are considered a valid ticket to be considered for upgrade, Advanced, Super Off-Peak, Off-Peak, and Anytime tickets. Rail Rovers and Brit Rail Tickets are also valid tickets that can be upgraded. When purchasing a ticket upgrade it will be subject to availability and must be purchased on the train you are travelling. The Weekend upgrades cannot be booked in advance.
Online: Tickets can be purchased online using East Coast Trains easy and user-friendly purchase system for Outward and Return Journeys. Your online ticket can be collected at the self-service ticket machine.
Telephone: East Coast Trains provides a dedicated sales line and text phone open 7 days a week.
At the Station: Tickets are available from East Coast Trains personal inside the ticket offices inside the stations and with other train companies.
Self-service Ticket Machine: Provide a fast and convenient way to access your ticket without waiting in lines. When you use the Self-service ticket machine, you will be able to purchase all the tickets you need for that days travel. Your credit or debit card and booking reference number will be required.
On Board: You can also purchase a ticket from the Train Guard on board the East Coast Trains. Buy tickets in advance is recommended, as you will only be able to purchase First or Standard Open or Day tickets for a single or return travel. There are no discounts for tickets purchased on board except travellers with a Disabled Person’s Railcard
Assisted Travel: East Coast Trains offers a team ready to aid the disabled passenger with arrangements of ticket purchase, assistance to and from the train, seat or wheelchair space reservations, and travel transfer to other train operators. East Coast Trains honours their commitment of improving accessibility for all of their customers.

East Coast Trans provides extensive travel information regarding timetables for weekday and weekend travel. The timetables will supply you with the train ID, head code, days run, power type, destinations, arrival and departure times.
