World's oldest backpacker' plans two-month trip to Europe at 95 years old

Liege by Eurostar

Liege is a major city located in Belgium with a population of about 175,000 people. The city has been around since it was settled by the Romans and is credited as being responsible for Christianization of the region. Many of the musicians from this city were recruited to play for Pope Clement VI. The city is known for the many types of churches including the oldest dating from 682.

Strategically this city has been a target of many different armies over the centuries. Even after the city was reinforced with a castle on a hill overlooking the city, it still faced many threats from other armies. The city was practically destroyed in 1468 when King Louis XI and Duke Charles the Bold attacked the city. In 1794 the city was captured during the French Revolution. A full class revolt of the working classes happened in 1886. Troops called in to quell the rebellion only spurred more unrest.

Twelve forts were place around the city in 1880 to provide defence. The forts did little to stop the Germans in 1940 when they captured the city in only three days. Today, Liege is recognized as a socialist city and it has seen a huge increase in its revenues after the creation of the European Union.
