Rotterdam is located in the western part of Netherlands and is situated in South Holland. It is the second largest municipality of the country and has a population of over six hundred thousand people. The greater Rotterdam area has a population of almost two million people and is made up of the Rotterdam Rijnmond region.
Rotterdam port is the largest one in Europe and has been the busiest until it was passed by the Shanghai port. The city gets its name from a dam that covers the Rotte River. After 1150, several bad floods in the area stopped the development of the city. This flooding led to a system of dams and dikes being built that still exist today. In the mid thirteen hundreds Holland granted the city its rights. A shipping channel was built to provide access to other cities which also allowed the city to grow as trade increased.
After many years, the historic port continued to grow and become one of the most important ports of the East India Company. During WWII the Germans took control of the Netherlands. Hitler had hoped to take the city in one day but things did not work out as expected. The city finally capitulated after a great deal of destruction to the city by bombing from Germany. Over the next few decades, the city was rebuilt. The city experimented with different types of architecture during this time.
The Netherlands is truly a melting pot of different ethnic backgrounds. The city is made up of people from Dutch, Turkey, Europe, Morocco, Chinese and more. More than half of the population is made up of people who are not of Dutch origins. The city is divided into two parts by the Nieuwe Maas River. Many parts of this historic city are below sea level but are habitable because of the many dikes. The port has been a strong economical influence on the city because of its access to the Rhine.
