London to Avignon Fare

Situated on a rocky spur above the waters of the Rhone, Avignon has been inhabited since ancient times. Its name seems to be of Celtic origin, supposing that either means "river city" or "the city with violent winds." Popes Palace, located in the center of town, atop the promontory, was built in almost 30 years. The works were carried out during the pontificate of three popes. In 1348, Queen Joanna I of Sicily, as countess of Provence, has sold the city of Avignon Pope Clement VI for the sum of 80,000 florins.

The walls surrounding the town are well preserved and have been elevated to the order of popes in the years ahead.
Avignon, situated in the heart of the Vaucluse region of southern France, is known for two things: Le Palais des Papes (Popes Palace) and the Saint Benezet bridge (the famous song for children: "Sur le Pont d'Avignon”). Popes Palace abounds in towers and turrets in Gothic style, with walls over 5 feet thick. You can visit 25 rooms, including reception halls, monasteries, chapels and the pope's private apartment. The fires have destroyed many of the rooms and only one bedroom remained fully furnished to impress tourists.

The famous bridge, built in the twelfth century, to transport St. Benezet in a nearby village, Villeneuve,  kept only four of the 22 original bridge arches . This information is only a few innocent lines of Avignon’s impressive historical almanac. Many people are interested in the history of this enchanting city; others want to be present at any cost, at least once in their lifetime, at prestigious concerts performed in Avignon. You don’t have to dream Avignon too much, because your dream is fulfilled.
