A Roman castle was built in the early seventh century to protect the city. A city wall was built around the city to help protect the city and castle in the early twelve hundreds. In 1351, Zurich joined the Swiss Confederacy. The city eventually became the Federal capital in 1839.

Rapid developments began in the late eighteen hundreds that led to the construction of several organizations that still stand today. The Zurich Stock Exchange was created in 1877 and this led to its rapid financial growth over the next few decades. The city has some of the most beautiful land in all of Switzerland. Lake Zurich provides a backdrop that permits visitors to enjoy the hospitality of the this city.

Eluntern Cemetery is where James Joyce is buried. Near the tomb for James Joyce is a unique statue of the author. People come from far and wide to view this statue dedicated to the author of Ulysses. Many other famous people are buried in this cemetery.

Zoological Garden contains more than twenty-two hundred animals. You can enjoy the aquarium and an open-air aviary. There are several houses to visit including the elephant house, ape house, terrariums, and the giant tortoise house. This is one of the most popular attractions in the city.

Zunfthaus zur Meisen
is one of the city's oldest guild halls. Wrought-iron gatehouse opens into the Munstehof. Most of the guild hall is dedicated to ceramics and porcelain of Zurich.

Fine Arts Museum is the home of many nineteenth and twentieth century paintings. The museum was founded in 1976 and today houses the largest collection of modern and classical arts. Many wonderful paintings are included in the collection including some from Marini, Picasso, Chagall, Bonnard, and Lipsshitz.

Expovina is the city's largest wine exhibition that has thousands of visitors flocking aboard dozens of boats in the harbour for wine tasting. Do not miss this annual event each November that takes place on the fair waters of Lake Zurich.
